Pumpkin Season for Your Skin: The October Reset in San Diego
Pumpkins are everywhere in October — on porches, in lattes, and, as it happens, in some of the best fall skincare. Pumpkin is not just a seasonal decoration: the fruit is naturally rich in enzymes, vitamin A and vitamin C, which is exactly what sun-tired San Diego skin needs after a long summer.
Here is what pumpkin actually does for your face, and the simple October-to-December plan we use at Del Rey Spa to get skin glowing before the holidays.
Why pumpkin works on skin
Pumpkin contains natural enzymes that gently dissolve dead surface cells, so skin looks brighter without the scrubbing or stinging of a strong peel. It is also packed with vitamin A, which supports cell turnover, and vitamin C, which helps fade the uneven tone left by summer sun.

Because it is enzyme-based rather than acid-based, a pumpkin treatment suits most skin types, including sensitive skin that cannot tolerate a glycolic peel. If you would like the pumpkin enzyme used during your facial this fall, just ask when you book and we will work it into your treatment.
Why October is the right month
Exfoliation of any kind makes skin a little more sensitive to the sun. In July, with long beach days, that is a problem. In October the sun is weaker and the days are shorter, so your skin has time to recover between treatments and hold its results.

There is a timing reason too: skin renews itself roughly every 28 days. If you want to glow for holiday parties or December family photos, two or three treatments spaced four to six weeks apart need to start now.
Step 1 — Rehydrate before you exfoliate
Sun-stressed skin is usually dehydrated, and dehydrated skin reacts badly to exfoliation of any kind. The Hydrating Facial restores moisture with a vitamin A and C scrub, a triple mask and collagen-boosting LED, so your barrier is calm before anything stronger.

You are in this group if your skin feels tight after cleansing, makeup clings to flaky patches, or fine lines look deeper than they did in May.
Step 2 — Enzymes and vitamin C for tone
This is where the pumpkin season really pays off. The Brightening Facial with vitamin C uses enzyme exfoliation, a glycolic or lactic peel and a radiance mask to fade dullness and sun spots. The Healthy Glow Facial takes a gentler route, with aromatherapy steam, an enzyme treatment and a calming massage.

Step 3 — Clear what summer left behind
Sunscreen, sweat and salt water clog pores, especially across the forehead and nose. The Deep Cleansing Facial handles that with exfoliation, a salicylic peel, gentle extractions and blue LED to settle any breakouts that followed the summer.

Step 4 — Protect your results
San Diego is sunny year round, and UVA rays — the ones that drive early aging — come through clouds and car windows in every season. Every facial here finishes with moisturizer and SPF, and daily sunscreen at home is what stops your results from undoing themselves by spring.

- Late November: Deep Cleansing Facial, or a second brightening treatment
- Early December: Healthy Glow Facial about a week before your event
Not sure where to start? Book the Classic European Facial and your esthetician will look at your skin and build the plan with you during the appointment.
Pumpkin at home, carefully
Homemade pumpkin masks are all over the internet every October. Fresh pumpkin is acidic and the strength varies from one squash to the next, so a kitchen mask can sting or leave skin red. Professional formulas use a measured amount of enzyme in a balanced base, which is why they are gentler and more predictable than anything you can mix at home.
Between visits, three things matter most: a gentle cleanser that does not strip, a hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid, and a daily SPF you enjoy wearing. We use professional European lines in the studio — Dr. Kraut Milano, Anna Lotan, SkinScript and Derma-E — and many are available in our online shop.
